If you have already researched the reasons to incorporate a water feature into your garden, the next thing to look into is the options available. Today water features are available in a variety of sizes, designs and they can be made from an assortment of materials. This can make choosing garden water features difficult but with the right guidance, you can quickly and easily find the right feature for you.
Water gardens are living water features, filled with and surrounded by plants to create a lush natural setting.
Reflecting pools are usually a focal point located near a landscape feature that is reflected in the glassy surface of the water.
Ornamental pools normally incorporate a decorative piece such as a cascading fountain or waterfall creating movement.
Come in a variety of shapes and sizes; these can be more traditional carved stone, granite, reflective metals or use natural unfinished slate. They create sound of water tumbling and splashing on itself combined and a cool refreshing mist.
Like fountains, waterfalls add sound and motion to the garden. Often created with natural stone slabs or boulders, but can be created using more angular smooth materials as part of a more minimalist style. They can be used as a focal point to bring a vertical dimension or link different levels within a garden.
Streams are ideal for linking features together and creating a flow through a garden, they are ideally suited to a larger space.
The location of features running on mains electricity is only limited by the length of the cable. By running the cable to an outdoor plug or a socket you can switch on your water feature whenever you desire or leave it running all the time. For a more eco friendly option you could choose solar which also allows the feature to be completely self contained. These water features do need a good level of sunlight, which may limit where you can place them in the garden.

If you’re one of the growing number of renters in the UK you may be wondering what you can do to improve your outdoor space. You may be constricted by your landlord’s stipulations, or by the size of your garden, or it may simply be that you don’t want to put lots of effort into a garden you’ll eventually leave behind.
Whatever your flat and landlord situation is, from inner city flats with no gardens, flats with a concrete yard, to flats with balconies, and flats/houses with gardens large and teeny tiny; Planters and pots could be the answer to your woes!
Cadix planters are modern and contemporary, and perfect for adding some greenery to a hard landscaped garden. They fit in perfectly with the urban scenery as they come in a range of materials and finishes. All of the planters are very durable and come in a variety of sizes and shapes. It also means that when you come to leave you can take your plants with you!
If you only have a balcony and would like to grow your own veg a trough planter could be the ideal solution. Fill it full of ‘come again’ lettuce, nasturtiums, chillies, herbs and pot grown strawberries and be self-sufficient for the whole summer. The Royal Horticultural Society has some great tips on how to grow in pots for practical advice on growing come again lettuce CLICK HERE.
Container gardening is also a good option if you have a concrete yard, or if your only outdoor space is a doorstep. Container gardening is an extremely versatile way of planting and are the perfect home for colourful annuls and half-hardy perennials. Most shrubs, climbers, grasses and even some trees can be successful in planters. Spring is normally the best time to plant up your containers, for more detailed information the RHS has lots of tips.
If you want some greenery but haven’t caught the green-fingered bug the plastic topiary may be the answer! The Cadix Buxus Ball is UV protected and made from high quality material; artificial topiary is low maintenance and the perfect way to give your planters an instant makeover.

Whether your water feature is large or small, traditional or stainless steel, it will still need TLC throughout the year to keep it working at its best. This is especially important in the winter, as freezing temperatures can be a problem if you’re not prepared. If the water in the fountain bowls is allowed to freeze, it expands causing damage to the pump and fountain bowl.
At OutdoorLivingUK we want your water feature to have a long life, so here are some tips to keep it protected…
Your water feature should be cleaned periodically. Leaves, twigs and blossoms should also be removed from the fountain. Solar panels and lighting should be checked for cracks on a regular basis. The beginning of winter is a great time to do this.
The UK usually has a mild enough climate that all our garden fountains can be left running virtually all year round. Even as the frosty mornings arrive the movement of the water and the slight warmth generated by the pump will keep your fountain free from ice.
We recommend purchasing a Frost Proof Winter Kit, this includes sterilisation tablets for cleaning and Fountain Frost Proof to stop the water from freezing.
If you’re not planning on using your water feature during the winter we advise that you drain all the bowls out and pour the water out from the main reservoir inside the fountain. (A tip here if you are struggling to get all the water out, place a towel inside the back and this will soak up excess water).
Once drained apply a Winter Protection Cover for total protection and prolong the life of the paint finish, drain the fountain, cover and store indoors.
The pump should be removed from the fountain and stored in a dry area.
This advice should keep your water feature in tip-top condition, but if you have any queries give us a call on 01733 688464.
